Salim Home Services began in 2018 with a vision rooted in family, hard work, and a deep passion for home improvement. For us, it’s more than just offering handyman services, it’s about helping homeowners bring their visions to life, one project at a time.
Our journey started when Matt was working long shifts at a local mill, and Kristen knew there had to be a better way. She combined her business experience from a previous design venture with her sister and her lifelong passion for home improvement. From a young age, Kristen dreamed of becoming an architect (eventually studying interior design), inspired by helping her dad on drywall jobs and exploring the layouts of new homes. Meanwhile, Matt brought his technical expertise to the table with a background and degree in carpentry and construction, honed by working alongside his uncle, a master plumber.
Our first major project together was our 1900s farmhouse. We poured our hearts into every renovation, working as a team and realizing how powerful our combined skills were. It was during these late nights and long weekends that the idea of Salim Home Services took root. Kristen was driven by the frustration of having endless home improvement ideas but lacking the time and help to bring them to life, especially with Matt’s demanding work schedule. She realized that so many homeowners faced the same struggle, putting off projects for “someday.”
The motivation behind our business is simple: to make it easier for homeowners to complete their small to medium-sized projects NOW, not someday. Life is unpredictable, and we believe in making the most of today. One evening, Kristen told Matt, “We’re opening a handyman business,” and from that moment, there was no looking back. It took countless hours of planning, but by March of 2018, Salim Home Services was official. Our original goal was for Matt to leave his mill job within a year, but with hard work and determination, he was fully committed to the business in just three months, balancing mill shifts and home projects until we made it happen.
Today, we live in that same farmhouse with our 11 goats and our dog, grateful for the journey that brought us here. In 2022, we welcomed our first son and also ventured into a new business idea, a pressure washing service cleaning trash cans. We were the first to offer this service in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, PA area. Although a local competitor recently acquired our customers, it allowed us to refocus on our true passion: our handyman business and our growing family.
Matt now also serves as the fire chief for the Elrama VFC, dedicating his free time to helping others, which is at the core of who we are.
We feel incredibly blessed and grateful for the wonderful customers who have trusted us with their homes. This is more than just a business to us, it’s our family’s story, our dream, and our way of making a difference, one home at a time.
